Dirty Work on the Trail
or... Go Slow With the Pony Express

Author(s):
Robert  Swift

Pounding hoofs! Clouds of dust! It's the Pony Express! The Widow Mentary and her daughter, Ella, operate the relay station in Carson City, Nevada. Ella loves stalwart cowpoke, Ned Sterling. He wants to ride for the Pony Express, even if he has to risk death and diet. Alas, things take a mysterious turn when a stagecoach rumbles into town. Driver Foghorn Redburn's horses are cranky because the blacksmith used thumbtacks instead of nails. The rugged journey has left the passengers just as grumpy. Now all must watch out for the villainous Pugsley Moonquake and his beautiful but dangerous half-sister, Felicia Da Flea. The villain plots to disgrace the Pony Express, defraud the railroad and steal Ella Mentary's money. When an all-important letter must reach Sacramento by morning, Pugsley shows what a stinker he really is. "All ages will enjoy the good fun in this melodrama which plays heavily on one liners, asides to the audience, and physical comedy." Plays for Children and Young Audiences
